The Pros And Cons Of Getting An Online College Degree

Through the technology of the Internet, so many things are now possible today that before were difficult or impossible. Online college education is an exceptional example. While distance learning programs have been around for quite some time, online degree programs allow for a higher level of distance education.

Web-based technologies allow you to consult with your instructor, talk to a college advisor, or have discussions with fellow students, in addition to the general run of your academic studies. You will receive lectures, reading materials, assignments, and test from your online instructor through e-mail or website postings. You will be able to work on these at a highly flexible schedule before you have to submit your requirements. This makes it possible for many online degree students to work at a full-time job while completing their academic training. It is also very helpful for stay-at-home parents who do not wish to leave their young children at home. Online college degree programs allow them to continue onto higher education without making sacrifices on the familial front.

The advantages of online college education are fairly clear. But does it offer any disadvantages? The most serious problem is likely to be the proliferation of online degree scams. These are websites that promise to send you a diploma with the payment of a fee. Such fake diplomas are academically worthless, and are extremely unlikely to convince corporate recruiters and other types of employers. Not to mention that fake diploma production is an illegal business. A number of online degree programs are basically just diploma mills--in which case, you may do some academic work in order to earn a diploma, but the training is sub-standard and the work required is very minimal. These types of programs are hardly any better than those giving out fake diplomas, and the degrees you gain from them will not impress company recruiters either.

There are definitely some pitfalls involved when selecting an online college degree program. Therefore you should make sure that the program you are interested in is duly accredited by a reputable educational agency. Look out for notices of accreditation on the website and check to see if they are correct. Go to the website of the accrediting agency and check to see if the program is listed there.
